LOMA application to remove an existing structure from a FEMA Flood Zone that did not have an established Base Flood Elevation.

Our Solution

Hayter Engineering conducted a survey of a rural property that had an existing structure on it in order to submit a packet to FEMA to see if the structure could be removed from the Special Flood Hazard Area (Flood Zone). The structure was in Zone A, which does not have a designated Base Flood Elevation (BFE) so Hayter Engineering conducted cross section surveys of the Special Flood Hazard Area to determine the BFE. Once the BFE was determined it was compared to the Lowest Adjacent Grade (LAG) to the structure and FEMA determined that although it was above the BFE, it was not above by enough to remove it on that alone. Hayter then investigated and found that when the structure was built, the flood zone was well away from it. By coordinating with the lo- cal Emergency Coordinator, a FEMA Mapping Specialist and the County Judge we were able to get a LOMA issued from FEMA removing the structure from the Special Flood Hazard Area.
